Tim Shaw
b.1964
Tim Shaw was born in Belfast and left Northern Ireland in 1984 for a foundation course in Fine Art at Manchester Polytechnic. He then studied at Falmouth College of Art, 1985-89, where he achieved a first class degree in his BA (Hons) in Fine Art and has remained in Cornwall ever since. The landscape of Cornwall, its ancient aspect, and what Shaw describes as its ‘timelessness’ have strongly influenced his work as has the work of Bergman and Tarkovsky, modern technology, 19th Century French Sculptors and medieval cathedrals.
Shaw’s work often engages directly with contemporary issues and regularly grapples with the complex social and political issues generated by the ‘war on terror’ as well as exploring themes of death, myth and mystery.
Tim Shaw has won numerous awards, most recently the Kenneth Armitage fellowship, which has involved Shaw living and working in the remarkable Kensington house and studio of the famous British sculptor for the past two years. He has exhibited widely in the UK and has completed a number of public and private commissions.
