Jonathan Kenworthy: Six Decades of Sculpture

20th March - 20th April 2013

A major retrospective of sculpture and works on paper by Jonathan Kenworthy; the undoubted master of movement in sculpture. Celebrating Kenworthy’s long career, Six Decades of Sculpture explored the virtuosic talent and charismatic sculptures that have made his name and charted Kenworthy’s progression from child prodigy to mature sculptor. Now in his 70th year, few sculptors can boast such an extensive and successful artistic career as Jonathan Kenworthy. His precocity for drawing and modelling was evident from early childhood, gaining him a place at the Royal College of Art in 1954 at the astonishing age of eleven. Here the young Kenworthy studied amongst peers ten years his senior, illustrating a maturity and talent that was far beyond his young age. Six Decades of Sculpture not only reflected Kenworthy’s thematic interests, but showcased his extraordinary comfort with material, process and sculptural form. Casting his work with Pangolin Editions foundry since 2001, his bold, abstract marks punctuated with fine detail, instil his sculptures with a sense of both energy and intimacy. A talented draftsman, his works on paper also demonstrate a fluidity and ease with mark-making that can only be achieved through decades of practice. This innate understanding of his craft paired with a passion for his subject, have given new life to the genre of figurative sculpture.
