Rooted strongly in the figurative tradition, the power behind Coventry’s sculpture is his strong affinity with the subjects. His sculpture explores the animals familiar to him from his years farming, such as birds, bulls, cows and boars, eloquently capturing their ruggedness and gentleness, their movement and behaviour.
This fabulous 'Standing Hound' is the last in the edition of this popular sculpture which so perfectly captures the character and essence of our four-legged friends. With its alert stance, elongated limbs and gently tilted head, the hound appears poised between stillness and movement. Coventry’s distinctive faceted modelling gives the bronze a lively surface, catching the light and reinforcing the structure and sense of form beneath the skin.
