Steve Dilworth was born in Yorkshire, studied at Maidstone College of Art and since 1983, has lived and worked on the remote Isle of Harris, Scotland. The landscape of eastern Harris is both rugged and beautiful in the extreme, with exposed rock three thousand million years old left by scouring glaciers from the last ice age. The energy and presence of such surroundings are powerfully conveyed in Dilworth’s work and he is renowned for using a vast range of natural materials, mostly found on the island.

The beauty, dynamism and essential value of Calm Water 2 resides in the energy, substance and idea invested within. Melding beautifully into the palms of our hands, this isn’t a passive Art object to be admired from afar. It was made to be held in response to human need, to soothe, comfort and reassure, achieved in Dilworth’s unique fusion of materials, craft and intent. The phial which sits inside the piece is filled with calm water, collected from the Minch opposite Dilworth's house. In this work, Dilworth also evokes the solitary act of skimming stones along the calm waters to create ripples across the surface.
