Wall is a rare and significant work from Mayer’s early career. While she later became renowned for her serene, rhythmic works in bronze, this sculpture captures a pivotal moment of mid-century experimentation. Created in 1968 after a seminal trip to New York, where Mayer was enthralled by its towering architecture, Wall uses interlinked, geometric composition reflecting her lifelong fascination with structural patterns. By using stove-enamelled steel – an industrial material rarely seen in her later practice – Mayer bridges the gap between post-war constructionism and the organic abstraction that defined her legacy.
Born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, Charlotte Mayer enrolled at Goldsmith’s College in 1945 before completing her training at the Royal College of Art at a time when female sculptors were not always made to feel welcome.
Mayer was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Sculptors and exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy. Her work is held in numerous public and corporate collections.
