This beautiful maquette was created for Kenneth Armitage's last and largest monumental commission 'Reach for the Stars' which was completed in the last year of his life. The maquette originally intended to be cast in an edition of six only ever had three casts made making this a rare piece in this prestigious sculptors oeuvre.

At 30ft tall, 'Reach for the Stars' was Armitage's most monumental commission. Originally sited at a property in Newcastle and then toured on exhibition it is now sited in Edinburgh. Armitage’s later works often feature symbolic arms in gestures of reaching or welcome. ‘Reach for the Stars’ depicts both hand and star, supported on an arm that is simultaneously human and architectural and perfectly captures Armitage’s original inspiration: “If you reach for the stars you might just reach the rooftops.”
