This fabulous collection of ceramic whistles made by Emma Carlow was first inspired by the Mexican Whistles she saw at the British Museum which are made largely from the tourist industry and have a fresh lively character due to the speed at which they are made. Fascinated by the way in which such an ephemeral vehicle as a whistle could link cultures around the world on the 17th March 2022, Carlow decided to make a whistle everyday for a year.
Taking the same fresh and dynamic approach to making Carlow’s resulting 365 whistle sculptures are playful, mysterious and curious creatures, grouped together in four vitrines, similar to a museum display. They are also all working whistles.
As her whistle making year came to an end a quarter of the whistles were included in the Royal Academy 2023 Summer Exhibition, curated by David Remfry. Pangolin London are delighted to have a selection of the remaining whistles on display for our exhibition Animal Instinct.
