“I was given a book called Nature's Chaos (1990) written by James Gleick with photographs of natural geological formations. I homed in on some images of solidified bubbles which looked dark and shiny, and it kicked off a sustained body of bubble sculptures. I saw an association with basic forms of the proliferation of life such as frogspawn and fish-eggs. It was thrilling to see it as part of the earth's crust with the promise of abundance. I responded to this instinctively as it was clear evidence of the fluid continuity of life, the exuberance of nature which I celebrated in cubes that looked as if they were cut from huge quantities of such bubbles. A bit later I reversed this process by emptying out cubes and leaving the negative forms as impressions.”
