This beautiful, delicate drawing relates to a wool tapestry of the same title that Frink made in 1983, an edition of which now belongs to the Murray Edwards College of Women’s Art in Cambridge.
This study completed six years earlier depicts Frink’s signature man and horse making the pilgrimage to the town of Chartres in France, home to a magnificent Catholic cathedral. Their relationship is one of simple synergy between man and beast with no saddle and bridle to control the beast and only a star for guidance.
Despite describing herself as alienated from the Catholic faith in which Frink had been brought up, she retained a strong Christian belief, completing several commissions for churches and cathedrals throughout her career.
