The female figure in space, contorted into strange stretches occupied Butler from the mid 50’s to the end of his career and Girl on Back 2 is a beautiful example of one of these figures. Fleshed out from the early unique works where as Butler described it he ‘knitted with steel’ these figures have fleshed out and become more tactile in the bronze but all retain a dynamic interest in movement.
