The couple has been an enduring subject throughout Lynn Chadwick’s long and productive career and spent the 1950s and 1960s distorting figures to become abstracted pyramids supported on spiky legs of which “Dancing Figures’ is an excellent example.

Chadwick rarely sketched sculptures ahead of making preferring to fully trust in his belief that the artist was a conduit for the subconcious and it was better to create freely, unfettered by referring to a sketch. Instead he often sketched his sculptures after creating them in order to explore them more fully. Interestingly the male figure in this couple bears a striking resemblance to the 'Standing Figure' bronze Chadwick made the previous year which Pangolin London also has available.
