This fantastic early work was made the year that Lynn Chadwick represented Britain at the Venice Biennale of 1956 where he won the International Prize of sculpture beating Alberto Giacommetti. Second Stranger's body shows Chadwick's skill at fine welding giving it an almost exoskeletal feel, the head is reduced to a beak possibly inspired by the recently discovered cave paintings at Lascaux and the mass is supported on three spindly legs. These three features make Second Stranger instantly identifiable as a museum-quality early Chadwick.
