This structurally satisfying and playful terracotta piece is part sculpture, part purpose. The combination of the cylindrical vase with the doughnut ring feels fresh and contemporary, finding a forebear in shapes created by both ancient Peruvians and Picasso.
'The terracotta doughnut vase is composed of two separate forms, both made on the wheel and then cut and attached to unify them. The 'doughnut' part of the vase is hollow, which allows me to use them sculpturally as they are much lighter than they appear. These vases were made with flower arranging in mind, the idea being that the doughnut becomes part of the arrangement. This terracotta clay is fired to the extreme of its firing range, making it a much deeper and richer tone than is normally associated with the clay.'
