Kathryn Hearn’s porcelain hand-built vessels are inspired by the atmospheric skies above the Cambridgeshire Fens. They refer to the farmer’s intrinsic use of craft working within their uncompromising and functional environment. In the direct production and deconstruction of hand-building, she recognises imperfection but also the representation of femininity and purity.
Kathryn Hearn's ceramic practice traces the landscapes of her life; the Lake District, urban London and recently the Cambridgeshire Fens. Her recent work responds to the rhythms of an ancient and manipulated, now industrially managed landscape with its stoic fenlanders. The massive scale of the Fenland spaces with unexpected and extraordinary colours, hues and textures have provided immediate and visceral opportunities for her skill and visual language.
