This simplified bird has a great stillness, pared down to its very essence with a quiet, almost mystical presence.
A versatile artist and craftsman, O'Casey made his mark as a fully-fledged St Ives artist in the late fifties. He began his career working as an assistant to sculptors Denis Mitchell and Dame Barbara Hepworth, before becoming a prominent member of the St Ives school. Highly productive throughout his career, he successfully mastered a wide variety of materials and making processes including weaving, painting, printing, jewellery-making, and later, sculpture.
Breon O’Casey was born in London the son of Irish dramatist Sean O’Casey, and his Celtic roots remained of importance to him as did his father’s artistic leanings and encouragement. He exhibited widely and his work can be found in many private and public collections around the globe.Provenance
