This is an exceptional, unique example of Geoffrey Clarke's early forged iron work. Completed two years after he exhibited at the Venice Biennale of 1952 alongside eight fellow young British sculptors such as Lynn Chadwick and Geoffrey Clarke and four years after he, Chadwick and Butler had learnt to weld on the same British Oxygen course in 1950. Showing his talent for creating bold shape and form in such a difficult and hardly malleable material this was for Clarke an important piece which experimented with the idea of the tube piercing a flat plane.
