Steven Gregory: The Laughing and The Killing Series

13 December 2021 - 17 March 2022

"The press indicates that billions of bullets are produced each year and millions of young people around the world partake in inhaling laughing gas. I have reinvented and interpreted these as signs of our times to create miniature sculptures."

Using discarded everyday items, Steven Gregory has created The Laughing Series and The Killing Series.

The Laughing Series is fashioned from Nitrous Oxide canisters – also known as ‘Laughing gas’ – found by Gregory on the streets of London over the course of the past four years. Contrastingly, The Killing Series utilises a selection of spent brass bullet cases, collected from a local shooting range. Gregory then cut and folded the materials to produce his expansive series of miniature sculptures, occasionally with the addition of a stabilising base.

Speaking of his choice of medium, Gregory said: “The press indicates that billions of bullets are produced each year and millions of young people around the world partake in inhaling laughing gas. I have reinvented and interpreted these as signs of our times to create miniature sculptures.”

Counting over 200 individual works, Gregory’s miniatures span in subject matter from the abstract to the figurative. Gregory’s signature detail and humour is clearly evident in the cast of characters that populate both The Laughing Series and The Killing Series; from an array of pigs to intricate cut-out lettering, Gregory’s vision is executed with an unfailing precision.
