This lovely acrylic on paper by Breon O’Casey is both joyful and striking in its signature simplicity. Painted in 1993 O’Casey clearly enjoyed making the painting as he later made a small and delicate etching with a similar composition. This work has excellent provenance coming directly from the artists’ estate with works on paper of this quality becoming increasingly rare to purchase on the primary market.
Breon O’Casey, a versatile artist and craftsman, made his mark as a fully-fledged St Ives artist in the late fifties. He began his career working as an assistant to sculptors Denis Mitchell and Dame Barbara Hepworth, before becoming a prominent member of the St Ives school. Highly productive throughout his career, he successfully mastered a wide variety of materials and making processes including weaving, painting, printing, jewellery-making, and later, sculpture.
