Much like Rembrandt’s painting 'A Women Bathing in A Stream', on which this piece is inspired, Brown’s ‘Woman Bathing’ captures a solitary figure in a private moment. The distinctive ‘slit’ through this piece is a distinguishing indicator of Brown’s figurative work of the 1950s and 1960s and gives the work a potentially dark and sadistic feel which confront its viewer. This is furthered by the rough texture and surface of the bronze which resembles rock fissures and clefts.
