Man’ was a continuous theme visited by Clarke throughout his career. This particular aquatint is the artist’s working sketch for a later iron work entitled ‘Complexities of Man’ welded by the artist in 1951 and shown at the British Pavillion at the Venice Biennale of 1952.

First Impression: Edition of 25 started by the artist in 1950; not 2,5,7-9 printed on laid paper with small margins. No. 3 of this printing is dated 'Jan.1950'
Second impression: 'C' engraved in corner of plate. Full edition of 25 plus 5 artist's proofs printed on wove at the RCA for Taranman Gallery in 1976.
